Depends HOW LONG you are referring to. Yes, it is very true that Apple gives one of the longest software upgrade support of any phone. Most Android flagships gives 2 or 3 years of full software upgrades (not just security patches, full OS upgrades), Apple gives about 5 years of full OS upgrades and another 2 years or so of security patches. So from an average user's perspective, that looks very good.. but that's not the end of the story and I'll explain below.

The problem with iOS is that once the iOS software becomes too outdated and old, eventually, apps will NO LONGER BE SUPPORTED… so eventually, you will NOT be able to install or update apps anymore. Go and get yourself an iPhone 4S and see if you could actually use it… the iPhone 4S is basically obsolete because 95% of apps can no longer be installed or updated, it says “this app is no longer compatible with this device”. Yes, Apple let's you download older versions of apps SOMETIMES, but even then, many of those old version of the app doesn't really work anymore (online functions are disabled).

The iPhone 5, 5S, and 6 are starting to become obsolete. I have an iPhone 4S, the phone's hardware is still in excellent shape.. but the phone software is obsolete. So while 7 years of software update is impressive (5 years of OS upgrades), the iPhone coming totally obsolete around 8–9 years later is not great. I would rather have no updates and longer app support than have longer update support and shorter app support.

Which should you choose?

So then, iPhone or Android: Which should you choose? Both platforms have pros and cons, and, as with many purchase decisions, your choice will depend on what you value most.

Owning an iPhone is a simpler, more convenient experience. There's less to think about, and because Apple's iPhone represents the single most popular brand of smartphone, there's an abundance of support everywhere you go — whether you need your battery replaced or you're just trying to pick up a new case.

Android-device ownership is a bit harder in those respects. Yet it's simultaneously more freeing, because it offers more choice — choice of how much you want to spend, choice of hardware and software features, and choice in how you organize and personalize your experience. If you're extremely particular about the technology you use, you might find Android more liberating — dare I say, fun — though you'll also likely lament the relative lack of high-quality apps and accessories.
